Josh & Kathryn: Wedding at Twigs Tempietto

Congratulations to Josh & Kathryn! This was definitely one of my favorite weddings yet. Of course, any time there's shrimp and grits involved it's bound to be a good time. The day started out downtown Greenville at Bubbly Blow Dry Bar for hair and makeup and mimosas for the ladies. Next up, we moved over to ceremony/reception venue at Twigs Tempietto. This place is tucked away behind Haywood Mall but is truly a little oasis. The best part is that not only did Twigs provide the venue, but they also were the florist and caterer which takes a lot of stress out of the planning.

The wedding was wonderful and the reception was a blast. Everyone there had an amazing time celebrating Josh & Kathryn's marriage. Also, I'd like to give a shout out to the vendors at the wedding. Ya'll did a fantastic job!

  • Wedding Dress: David's Bridal
  • Florist, Catering, & Wedding/Reception Venue: Twigs Tempietto (https://twigs.net)
  • Wedding Planner: Sam Nelson of Twigs & Maria Pryor, wedding coordinator
  • Hair: Megan at Bubbly Blow Dry Bar
  • Makeup: Leah Milan at Flawless (http://www.ashevilleairbrushmakeupartistry.com)
  • DJ/Band: Jumping Jukebox

Clemson Seniors: Arianna, Emily, & Sydney

Finally getting around to blogging some of the highlights from a couple months ago from a senior session with these awesome ladies. We also learned how hard it is to get everyone's bottle of champagne to spray at the same time. And that you should stand too close because the champagne WILL find it's way to your camera... ;)

Enjoy!

Jamie + Leah: The Wedding at Holly Tree Country Club

Congratulations to Jamie & Leah! They got married just a few weeks ago at the incredible Holly Tree Country Club in Simpsonville, SC. It was an amazing day with several exciting surprises throughout the day. For example, instead of just casually walking down the aisle like most couples, they literally danced their way out! Not to mention the choreographed first dance, which was a HUGE hit!

Below, I've posted some of my favorites from throughout the day. I hope you enjoy the photos and don't forget to share with all of your friends!

P.S. - I also want to take a minute to give a special shout out to all the vendors below. You all crushed it!

  • Venue: Holly Tree Country Club
  • Bridal Gown: David's Bridal
  • Hair & Make Up: Toni Merced and Portia Sims
  • DJ/Band: Jacob Kalu of Kalu Records & Entertainment

Caroline was the first of a marathon senior session a few weeks back. Originally, we started bright and early at 8AM on a Saturday, which is any college student's ideal time to wake up on the weekend. Nevertheless, she soldiered through it and we ended up with some awesome images!

Bo & Sarah Kate: The Engagement at Biltmore Estate

My wife is a teacher, and this year she just transferred from the school where she had been working with autistic preschoolers for the past 5 years to a middle school in the same district. It was at her new school that she first met Sarah Kate, and apparently, they instantly became best friends. From day one, she was coming home with stories about all the things she and SK did and talked about.

At some point, Sarah Kate mentioned she had been dating a guy named Bo for a good while now and that they were thinking about getting married down the road. Well, it wasn't too long after that conversation that Bo surprised her by proposing with this gorgeous ring! Naturally, she said yes (I mean, what lady could say no to the Bo!?).

To celebrate their engagement, my wife and I took off one Saturday with them to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. We ended up pulling over in one of the more secluded areas to capture a few quick engagement photos. Below are some of my favorites from the day. I love that you can tell just by looking through the images that these two were made for each other!

Weddings are always a magical day. But how would you go about making your wedding day into a fairy tale? You would make it Disney Themed of course!

That's exactly what the Benson's did in the Columbia, SC wedding. From Mickey & Minnie costumes for the ring bearer & flower girl to a different Disney movie theme for each table at the reception, this day was nothing short of spectacular!

Below are a few of my favorite shots of the day. Check them out and share your favorites!

Matt & Megan: The Engagement

If you are from Gaffney, SC, chances are you probably know Matt Robertson or Megan Gallman. I've been lucky enough to know Matt my entire life and have known Megan since we were in middle school. When they first started dating a couple years ago, everyone around immediately knew it was something special. I wasn't there personally, but I heard someone mentioned that Matt may have even dropped the "M-bomb" that first week they were together.

Over the past couple years, pretty much everybody was wondering when in the world he was going to ask her the "big question." I'm fairly certain there were often side bets behind their backs anytime any holidays or special occasions came around as to whether or not it was going to finally happen. Luckily for whoever put their money on this past Valentine's Day, Matt & Megan finally made it official that they were going to get married! Finallyl! ;)

A couple weeks ago, I met up with them at a local ball field and take some engagement pictures with a softball theme. We all had a blast and came away with some amazing images! Below are some of my favorites from the day. Take a look and be sure to share all of your favorites!

I also want to congratulate Matt & Megan, and wish you all the luck in the world as you begin the rest of your lives together! I'm so happy for the two of you!

The Man Behind the Lens: How I Became a Wedding Photographer

The Man Behind the Lens: How I Became a Wedding Photographer

I got married on October 3rd, 2015. My wife, McKenzie, and I were fortunate enough to be able to have the ceremony at her cousin's house in Charleston on the inter-coastal waterway. Since we were basically getting married in their backyard, we could only invite immediate family. This meant we would have to host a second reception back home a couple weeks later, so I was essentially planning TWO weddings. So let me tell ya, I know EXACTLY how stressful planning a wedding is!

We already had a pretty small budget that was strained between the ceremony in Charleston and the reception in Spartanburg. So when we learned my father-in-law-to-be was laid off, things got even tighter. We did everything we could to save some money, including having some close friends cater and even DJ our wedding. We also decided we would need to cut corners on our photographer. We tried to find one of the cheapest photographers we could find in Charleston and actually just had a friend with a nice camera take photos at the reception in Spartanburg.

Fast forward to several weeks later and we finally have our wedding pictures arrive. We started clicking through them and as we went on and on, we just weren't blown away by them like we had thought we would be. Slowly, our hearts began to sink as we realized that we had made a HUGE mistake on one of the biggest days of both of our lives! Sure, we had a couple photos that we liked out of the 500-600, but we were both left wishing we hadn't decided to cheap out on something so important.

Shortly after, I was sitting in a Barnes & Noble reading a book about photography and I couldn't get my mind off my wedding photos. I knew then that I had to become a wedding photographer. You see, I had always loved photography and got my first camera as a college graduation present several years prior. Despite my love for it, I never really considered becoming a professional. But every time I looked back on my own wedding experience, I just thought about how much I would hate for ANYONE to experience that for themselves. It has been my mission ever since to do everything in my power to give all of my clients the experience they deserve.

At Southern Son Photography, I’m dedicated to giving my clients a premium photography experience. My number one priority is to make sure you feel taken care of. It is my goal to offer an unparalleled customer service while providing tangible memories that last for decades to come!

Now that you know a little more about me, I'd love to hear about you! If you are currently looking for a wedding photographer or even someone to capture your engagement, maternity, or senior portraits, head over to our contact page and tell us about yourself!

Alistair & Sara: The Engagement

Alistair & Sara: The Engagement

I have to admit: this was definitely a first for me. But when Alistair approached me and asked if we could include their dogs into their engagement photos, I was all for it! If you know me, you know that McKenzie and I have a couple puppies ourselves, Roxy & Coleman. Of course, they are ages 4 & 9, so not exactly puppies, but you get the point. That being said, I totally understand wanting to have pets in photos. They are family, too! Plus, it definitely made for an exciting (and adorable) session.

One of my favorite things about this couple was the way their personalities really played off of each other. I'm actually pretty sure I was laughing about 76% of the time that day. And I LOVE the way that you can definitely see that personality shine through the photos.

Below are some of the highlights from the day. Hope you enjoy!

Gus was another senior from our Clemson Mini-Sessions last year. He was one of the first sessions of the morning and it just so happened to be raining that morning while our Charleston friends were battling with Hurricane Matthew. Luckily, the rain stopped about 15 minutes before we were supposed to start, so it worked out perfectly!
